1. Am I in the right room?
I will be standing at the door greeting every student. A welcome sign, my name and a class roster will be posted on the door. I will be helping my students find their names and check that they are in my class. For those that are in the wrong room I will provide directions to their correct classroom. Inside the classroom on the board will be a welcome message, my name and other supporting information.
2. Where am I supposed to sit?
During the first few weeks of class the seating will be assigned by alphabetical order. After that, the seating arrangement will be modified to facilitate peer and group collaborative work throughout the school year.
3. What are the rules in this classroom?
Every student will get a copy of the Classroom Behavior Plan. Two copies will be sent home, one has to be signed by the parents/caregivers and returned to the teacher during the first week of class. The second copy will be for them to keep.
In the classroom there will be a board with the Classroom Behavior Plan. During the first weeks of the year there will be an open discussion about the plan to make sure that all the students understand the rules, consequences and rewards of the classroom.
This plan will be provided to each new student.
4. What will I be doing this year?
Creating a structured environment is critical to having an organized classroom. Because of this, during the first two weeks of school, students will received detailed instructions for classroom procedures. We will focus on learning classroom procedures and expectations. We will learn how to be responsible for our behavior and learning.
5. How will I be graded?
My students will earn their own grade based on their mastery of the learning criteria. I will not grade using a “curve”. I will emphasize the completion of assignments and passing exams. Grading will be discussed with students when they receive their first assignment.
6. Who is the teacher as a person?
In order to help my students get to know me I will have a teacher’s show and tell. I will create a treasure box containing pictures and objects about my life, work, and family. I will be pulling the objects out one at a time and will present each object to my students. Because every person in my classroom is important; with the teacher and students’ own pictures and objects, we will create a personality bulleting board.
7. Will the teacher treat me like a human being?
“RESPECT is EARNED NOT GIVEN! Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to”.
In my classroom every student is important. All my students will be treated with respect, dignity, and love.
